What Is CBN?
CBN—cannabinol—is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that has become one of the most discussed plant compounds in the sleep and relaxation space. It is not synthesized directly by the hemp plant. Instead, CBN forms when THC is exposed to oxygen and light over time, gradually converting into a structurally distinct compound with its own unique properties.
At the concentrations found in hemp-derived products, CBN is non-intoxicating. It will not produce a “high.” What it will do—based on a growing body of early-stage research—is interact with your body’s endocannabinoid systemin ways that are commonly discussed for nighttime relaxation and sleep maintenance. How CBN Forms
Unlike CBD, which is produced directly by enzymatic reactions within the living hemp plant, CBN is a degradation product. When THC oxidizes—through exposure to air, UV light, or simply time—it loses a hydrogen molecule and converts into CBN. This is why aged cannabis historically carried a reputation for making people sleepy: the THC had partially converted into CBN.
CBN retains approximately one-tenth the binding affinity of THC at CB1 receptors, which may account for its mild calming effects without the psychoactive intensity of its precursor (PMC – CUPID Study Protocol). At the levels present in legal hemp products—typically 5–25 mg per serving—CBN is well below the threshold associated with intoxication.
CBN vs. CBD for Sleep: Different Roles, Complementary Effects
CBD and CBN are both non-intoxicating cannabinoids derived from hemp, but they serve distinct functions in the body:
CBD (Cannabidiol) is commonly discussed for broad daytime support—calm under pressure, physical comfort, and recovery. Research suggests CBD modulates the stress response primarily through the HPA axis and serotonin receptor pathways. It is not typically characterized as a sedative.
CBN (Cannabinol) is commonly discussed specifically for nighttime use—sleep onset, sleep continuity, and reduced nighttime awakenings. Its mechanism is distinct: CBN acts as a weak agonist at CB1 receptors, and the endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating circadian rhythmicity, suggesting a direct pathway through which CBN may influence the sleep-wake cycle.
In practical terms: CBD helps you manage the day. CBN helps you let it go at night.
They are not interchangeable—but they are highly complementary.

Your body’s internal clock—the circadian rhythm—determines when you feel alert and when you feel ready to sleep. The endocannabinoid system plays a documented role in this process: endocannabinoid signaling helps regulate the transition between wakefulness and rest.
A 2024 preclinical study published in Neuropsychopharmacology used polysomnography to measure CBN’s effects on sleep architecture in rodent models. The results showed that CBN increased total sleep time, including both non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) phases (Nature – CBN and Sleep Architecture). Researchers noted that the endocannabinoid system’s role in circadian regulation may explain how CBN facilitates the body’s natural transition into sleep—without overriding it.
On the clinical side, a 2023 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 293 participants found that 20 mg of CBN taken nightly significantly reduced the number of nighttime awakenings and overall sleep disturbance compared to placebo—without increasing daytime fatigue the following morning (PubMed – CBN and Sleep Quality).
What to note:
A 2021 narrative review emphasized that much of the earlier human data on CBN and sleep was limited in scope and sample size (PubMed – CBN: Separating Fact from Fiction). Support, Don’t Override: The No-Groggy Difference
Many synthetic sleep aids work by suppressing central nervous system activity—which can lead to next-morning grogginess, dependency, and disrupted sleep architecture over time. CBN works differently. Rather than sedating the brain into unconsciousness, CBN appears to support the body’s existing mechanisms for transitioning into and maintaining sleep.
In the 2023 clinical trial referenced above, participants taking 20 mg CBN reported no significant increase in daytime fatigue compared to placebo. This is a meaningful distinction for anyone who needs to wake up sharp—not sluggish—the next morning.
