For a limited time only, McDonalds sells its famous Shamrock Shake®. The shake was created in the late 1960s but has achieved global popularity today. So, what makes the beverage with a bright green hue so special (and can it be made healthy)?
The Shamrock Shake® is iconic, but it isn't a very friendly option for those watching calories or with food allergies. For those who love the green-colored drink (or its close cousin the OREO® Shamrock McFlurry®), you're in for a treat.
Read on to make the healthy Shamrock Shake, complete with healthy substitutions and the potential benefits of CBD. It's a drink to be enjoyed on Saint Patrick's Day and beyond!
How To Make A Healthy Shamrock Shake
Our version of the famous shake shares a lot of ingredients with a green smoothie. The classic drink usually contains as many calories as a meal, made with three ingredients — ice cream, syrup, and whipped cream.
While McDonald's has taken steps to include reduced fat ice cream and light whipped cream, it's still full of unhealthy fats and sugars for those looking to live a healthier lifestyle.
Luckily, no four leaf clovers are needed to enjoy a healthy shamrock shake recipe.

- Add ice, taste, and adjust as needed to meet your taste and texture preferences.
Milk (Dairy-free options!)
To make this healthy shake dairy free, you can use the following as possible substitutes:
- Lactose-free milk
- Coconut milk
- Almond milk
Really any alternative milk you choose could work! Nut milks are great because they can add nutrients. Look for sources fortified with vitamin D and calcium when possible.
Add this simple shake to your St. Paddy's Day celebrations (or enjoy this green drink any time of year)!
Instead of pure peppermint extract, you can use a handful of fresh mint leaves! If the shake isn't minty enough for you, increase the amount of pure peppermint extract to ¼ teaspoon.
There are lots of options for sweeteners that don't involve added sugars. Try the following:
- 5 Medjool dates, pitted
- Local raw honey
- Maple syrup
We've got two options for you when it comes to what CBD you want to use for this recipe. Refresh Mint water soluble will effortlessly mix into your shake while adding a touch of refreshing flavor. Enlighten Mint, which contains MCT oil, won't mix in as easily but is still a great option — it can add much needed nutrients to your diet.
