College may be a common rite of passage for young adults today, but that doesn't mean it's easy or commonplace. The university experience presents a unique set of challenges — and with that, a unique set of stressors that high-school students and post-graduate workers don't experience in the same way.
Grades and coursework are some of the most typical sources of stress for college students. The way classes build on each other (Math 1010 is followed by Math 2020, for example) means that a failed test or incomplete course can set you back quite a bit, and many students can relate to feeling anxiety about grades.
Relationships and peer pressure take on a different type of stress when you're away from home and living on your own for the first time. CBN may be one of the greatest natural, non-habit-forming sleep aids available.
CBN is a compound of the same family as CBD and THC. About 100 different cannabinoids have so far been discovered in the hemp plant — of these, THC, CBD, and CBN are the most studied and most prevalent.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. When thinking of the typical “high” achieved from marijuana, you're thinking of THC.

]]>There's not really a right or wrong answer about how to set up a routine — the real answer is whatever works for you. The end goal of a routine is to reduce your mental workload: if you already have things planned, you don't have to stress about planning them! And while you might not be able to anticipate emergencies, there are a handful of things that you can plan for.
Establish routines for sleep, homework, mealtimes, exercise, and fun to make the most of the time you have in each day.
A regular sleep schedule is one of the best ways to prevent fatigue, exhaustion, and daytime sleepiness. It also makes you more likely to get enough sleep, which is crucial for children and students who are growing and learning so much all the time.
When school is on the horizon, you can start adjusting your sleep schedule in increments of 15 minutes or half an hour. If you want to go to bed at 9:00 on a school night but have been going to bed at 11:00 all summer, try going to bed at 10:30 first, then 10:00, then 9:30 — instead of skipping all the way to 9:00. "Start the bedtime shift about a week early if you have kids aged 5–10; older kids can shift in a shorter time," says Ingrid Sorensen, mother of nine and professional organizer.
Keep in mind that sleep is the end of the routine, not the whole routine. An hour or so before bed, start to wind down. Turn off your TV, computer, or tablet so the bright light doesn't keep you awake. Take a relaxing shower or bath and change into your pajamas or comfy clothes. Do a relaxing, screen-free activity such as reading, journaling, or gentle yoga. When it's time to get in bed, keep the room dark, cool, and quiet (white noise is OK). If you are having trouble falling asleep after 30 minutes in bed, get up and do a relaxing, screen-free activity until you feel sleepy.
One of the best things you can do to make sleep easier is to only use your bed for sleep. Don't do homework, play games, or eat in bed — teach your body and brain that the bed is only for sleep.
Homework might be your least favorite part of school, but it's one of those things that you just have to get done. A homework schedule helps you develop good study habits and prevents you from procrastinating.
Younger students may need a parent's help to establish a homework schedule, whereas teens or college students can structure their own time around things like work and extracurriculars.
When setting up a routine for younger students, make sure that their wishes and concerns are heard — some kids want to jump right into homework after school, others want to play first. Either is fine as long as the homework gets done!
You should also establish how much homework or study time to set aside each day. An elementary school student may only have 30 minutes of homework, but a college student may be studying for multiple hours every day. Either way, set aside a realistic amount of time each day.
Choose a quiet, distraction-free area to designate as a homework spot, and keep any supplies handy (paper, pencil sharpener, laptop charger, etc.). The dining room at home is a great option for K–12 students, but if you're a college student, your dorm or apartment may not be optimal. The library or a study center is almost always the best idea. When you can stay focused and work faster, you'll have more time for fun and relaxation too.
As with any routine, consistency is key. Homework time should be the same time every day. Or, if school day schedules vary because of work or activities, try to schedule the same time for each day of the week: make each Monday the same, each Tuesday the same, etc.
Stick to homework time like you stick to class time, and re-schedule study time rather than canceling it altogether.
Healthy eating might be one of the trickiest routines to establish. It's just so easy to rely on microwave meals or swing through a drive-through on your way home. But when you have a meal plan and are able to shop for the things you'll need, you're already two steps ahead and that much more prepared to stick to healthy habits.
Whether shopping for yourself or a family, make a budget and stick to a shopping schedule. If you are able to get all the necessities at the same time, you won't be tempted to snag unhealthy snacks on a last-minute grocery run.
When planning family meals, keep the family's schedule in mind. You might need quick meals on weeknights with a lot of extracurricular activities, but weekends may have more time for cooking and sitting down together. Keep track of old favorites and new recipes that people enjoy so you can return to them often.
For between mealtimes, keep a stock of healthy snacks — fruit and veggies, nuts and legumes, and whole grain toast or crackers are all great ideas.
Make healthy eating as easy and accessible as you can so that keeping up with it is easy.

You should also schedule me-time at least once a week or every couple weeks. As much as you love your family or roommates, alone time can let you rest and recharge in a way nothing else does.

]]>Going back to school is a major change in routine, and the exposure to dozens of new people — and all of their germs — can take a toll on the immune system. Learn how to stay healthy this year whether you're a parent, student, or teacher.
Good handwashing habits are crucial for keeping germs away. Wash your hands after using the bathroom, before and after preparing food, before eating, and after touching communal surfaces or items like art supplies, drinking fountains, sports and playground equipment, etc. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer works in a pinch, but soap and water will always be best.
Hydration is key for delivering nutrients and eliminating waste from the body. But “hydration” doesn't just mean “drink water” — electrolytes and carbohydrates play an important role too. A sports drink has both, and fruit juice and tea are also great options. Just don't overdo it on the caffeianted sodas or energy drinks.
Getting a good night's sleep is also one of the best things you can do to stay healthy this school season. While you're sleeping, your body has a chance to rest and restore nutrients to key areas. Don't let school or extracurriculars take up too much of your time, and try to snag extra zzz's when you can (afternoon naps aren't just for toddlers!).
You should also do your best to support your immune system with vitamins and minerals. Supplements are great for adults, and a healthy diet can deliver all of the vitamins and minerals that children need. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are a great place to start, and fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and miso can deliver healthy piobiotics.
As the school year draws closer, make sure to get an annual checkup. If you do choose to immunize, try to get any necessary booster shots a couple weeks before school starts in case you need a day or two to recover.
Students, teachers, and families should also mask up and social distance when necessary to prevent the spread of germs. Everyday masks may not be needed or required at your school, but if you're worried about Covid during school, a mask can help. Also, some field-trip destinations may require masks, so keep one with you even if you don't wear it every day.
If you're concerned about germs coming home with you, change your clothes when you get home from school. Whether you're a student or a teacher, this trick can help keep home as germ-free as possible.
As the saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day — especially for kids and young adults whose bodies are still growing. A healthy breakfast with protein and complex carbohydrates gives you the energy you need for the rest of the day. Try an egg sandwich on whole-wheat toast. Add avocado slices for extra healthy fats.
Watch for signs of stress — whether you're a parent or a student yourself, you should be aware of the signs of stress, such as a short temper, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, and general school-related anxiety. Stress can impact the immune system, so handling stress in way that's healthy for the mind will be healthy for the body too.
You should also make sure that you or your kids are wearing a backpack properly — lazy backpack use can cause back and shoulder injuries. Always use both shoulder straps so that the big muscles in the abdomen and back can share the load. The straps should be snug so that the pack is high on the back, rather than sagging. Wide, padded backpack straps are more comfortable than thin straps, and if you're hauling around heavy textbooks and a laptop, consider a backpack with a waist strap to distribute weight to the hips instead of the shoulders.
College students, as independent young adults, face a different set of challenges than K–12 students. These tips may be especially useful for young people navigating school on their own for the first time.
Stick to healthy eating habits. It can be challenging to eat right in a student cafeteria, but try to include fruits and vegetables with every meal and get some variety rather than sticking to your favorite comfort foods.
If you find yourself looking for a productive outlet for stress or anxiety, don't underestimate the power of a good workout. Exercise reduces stress, helps you sleep better, and increases your overall health — all of which can help you fight off illnesses. Find a way to incorporate exercise into the routine you already have: use the campus gym, register for a fitness class, or bike to campus.
College-level courses can be overwhelming, especially when combined with the stress of being on your own for the first time. Make sure to take time for fun. Have a support system of friends in class and out of class — in-class friends can help with studying, and out-of-class friends can help you unwind and take your mind off classes for a bit.
College often brings newfound freedom, including freedom to be sexually active and experiment with different partners. As an adult, your sexual health is your responsibility and can affect more than just yourself. If you are sexually active, make sure to get tested regularly for sexually transmitted illnesses (many colleges have a clinic that offers this service). Communicate honestly — not just with your partner but with your support system too — and use protection such as condoms or dental dams to prevent the spread of STIs.
New independence can take a toll on your mental health, and homesickness, peer pressure, and academic stress are common. Even if you're excited to be on your own, make sure to keep in touch with your support system back home. Utilize campus counseling resources, too — many colleges offer free counseling for students.
The tips in this article are useful for just about anybody, but teachers have unique challenges when it comes to staying healthy during the school year. Here are a few things that may help.
Disinfect the classroom frequently to reduce the spread of germs. You can use disposable wipes, paper towels and disinfecting spray, or washcloths and disinfecting spray (but laundry may be a hassle).
Teach healthy habits so your students can help keep the classroom clean. Students can be responsible for wiping down surfaces they use, and you can schedule things like pre-lunch handwashing.
Time is a finite resource when you're a teacher, but do your best to plan meals and healthy snacks ahead of time — when you don't have junk food, you can't reach for it out of habit! Salad kits, slow-cooker meals, and healthy frozen entrees are all great ways to eat right even if you're short on time.
Speaking of time, it can be hard to fit an exercise routine in between teaching classes, grading homework, and planning lessons, but exercise is a key part of health. Weightlifting is a great option because it offers a lot of benefits in a short timespan: decreases abdominal fat, burns calories efficently, and makes you stronger, which reduces the risk of injury. And give yourself credit for the time you spend walking around your classroom or between different buildings on campus — you might already be exercising and not realizing it!
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. A mindfulness or medidation practice can reduce stress and help you relax, both of which can lead to better sleep (which, as we know, is crucial for immune health).
It can be easy to feel like school is your entire life, but make time for yourself whenever you can. Spend time with friends your own age and find an activity you enjoy that's entirely student-free. Your personal time is just as important as your teaching time.

The term adaptogen may sound like something out of a sci-fi story or fantasy video game, but its meaning is actually fairly straightforward. An adaptogen is a plant or fungi that works with your body to reduce physical, emotional, or mental stress. Humans around the world have been using adaptogens for centuries—perhaps even millennia—to improve their physical and emotional well-being.
What makes a plant or fungi adaptogenic? Generally, a substance must meet these three criteria to be deemed an adaptogen:
Homeostasis, by the way, refers here to the stability and optimal functionality of the body. Think of it as a stable and healthy baseline to which your body and its natural processes want to return.
Some adaptogens are so common that you may be using them without even being aware of it!
Ayurvedic and Chinese medical traditions have relied on adaptogenic herbs and fungi for centuries, which has led to their incorporation in many foods. The turmeric that colors curry powder as well as countless other Indian, Thai, and other southeast Asian dishes? That's an adaptogen. Ginseng, a powerful root which may boost energy, lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and reduce stress, is an adaptogen often used in soups in Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese kitchens.

The ancient physicians who identified these and other adaptogenic substances were on to something. These days, clinical research on the active compounds in these plants is growing and beginning to validate many of these traditional beliefs.
While the members of the fungus family are often dismissed as, well, mere fungi, these fascinating life forms are among the most diverse, adaptable and—from our human perspective—useful substances on earth.
Whether digesting oil spills or enriching the soil or even helping form rainclouds—fungi such as mushrooms are essential partners in human life. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of adaptogenic medicinal mushrooms, or what we at HempLucid also refer to as functional mushrooms.

We should point out that adaptogenic mushrooms aren't the same thing as "magic" (or psychedelic) mushrooms. They won't cause intoxication or otherwise make you feel strange. Rather, they help our bodies cope with stress naturally in a variety of ways.
One such way is by mediating the actions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis). The HPA axis is our body's primary stress-response system, which involves a highly complex interaction between multiple organs and parts of the brain. The HPA axis' main function is to control the release of glucocorticoids, powerful natural chemicals that fight inflammation and partner with your immune system. You've probably heard of one of the glucocorticoids: cortisol, the primary stress hormone.
Cortisol increases energy in the form of glucose in the bloodstream, enhances the way your brain uses glucose, and decreases functions that would be nonessential or even harmful in a fight-or-flight situation. But when the release of cortisol is out of balance, we end up feeling maxed-out, pushed over the limit, and generally stressed.
Stress is a big deal. In 2022, roughly three-quarters of adults in the United States said they'd experienced negative health impacts due to stress. And pharmaceutical interventions such as tranquilizers, SSRIs, and beta-blockers all impose their own negative side effects.
By comparison, adaptogenic medicinal mushrooms have few side effects. A small proportion of users report that they experience nausea, diarrhea, and stomach upset, with some experiencing dry mouth and headaches.
Additionally, functional mushrooms work to support our gut's microbiota as a prebiotic and may offer over a hundred other medicinal benefits such as antitumor, immunomodulation, antioxidant, radical scavenging, cardioprotective and antiviral actions.
In the next section, we'll look at these and other adaptogens in more detail to learn how you might benefit from incorporating them into your wellness practice.
The key to adaptogenic substances is in the name: the root word adapt. Adaptogens help your body adjust to stressful situations, both physical and mental. As we covered earlier, adaptogens promote homeostasis, or stability within the body. When the body is in homeostasis, its systems are functioning optimally, both independently as well as interdependently.
Here's a little more detail about some of the adaptogens we've discussed so far:
This is a great starting point if you want to add adaptogens into your supplement regimen, but this is by no means an exhaustive list! There's still plenty of research to be done into how different plants, roots, and fungi can benefit our minds and bodies, and you can find plenty of information at trusted sources online or by speaking with an herbalist or naturopath.
In our fast-paced modern world, we're used to quick fixes. If you're falling asleep at your desk, you brew a cup of coffee, and the caffeine speeds you up so you can get back to work. Adaptogens don't work like this, which can make them more of a challenge at first. But stick with it! The results are definitely worth the time. Here are some specific tips to help you maximize adaptogenic mushrooms benefits:
Take It Slow: As we discussed in the previous section, your body uses adaptogens to, quite literally, adapt to stressful situations.
For example, if you swap out your morning cup of coffee for a tea made with goji berries, you may find that over time you come to rely less on caffeine as your body learns how to be wakeful during the day and make the most of restorative sleep at night. A reasonable, small dose every day will be much more effective (and safer) than a larger dose once or twice a week.
Keep a Journal: When introducing a new adaptogen into your supplement regimen, consistency is key. Make sure to take your chosen adaptogen every day for a few weeks, maybe even a month or two, and keep track of how you feel. Are you getting more sleep? Do you feel more focused during the day?
A journal or chart can help you keep track of how your body and mind change, or adapt, over time. Let's stick with the example of goji berries. You might keep track of how often you wake up in the middle of the night or struggle to fall asleep. Over time, you might notice more full nights of sleep or that you're drifting off more easily.
Don't Go It Alone: As with any supplement regimen, make sure to consult your healthcare provider before starting any adaptogens. Because adaptogens and other supplements aren't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, the quality and effectiveness will vary depending on what brand you choose, how it was manufactured, the system of delivery (tea, capsule, or tincture), etc.
If you have any pre-existing conditions or take any medications already, some adaptogens may not be as effective or may have negative effects. Always speak with your healthcare provider if you plan to introduce adaptogens while taking other medication.
Make It Easy: Incorporating a new supplement into your routine can be tricky — especially if you don't really have a routine to speak of. But it's crucial to take your adaptogen consistently, so you should find a method that works for you.
For example, if you usually start the day with coffee, switch to a tea that includes your chosen adaptogen. If you enjoy smoothies, find a tincture or powdered form that you can easily include in a tasty blended drink. If you want to try capsules, keep them with your toothbrush or other pills so you remember to take them at the same time every day.
The easier it is to be consistent with your adaptogens, the more easily you'll be able to track and notice results.

But when we're focused on things in the past that we can't let go of or future things that haven't happened yet, it can be hard to focus on the present. These past and future worries can be stressful and lead to that fast, uneven breathing we're all familiar with.
This is why it's so important to detox not just your physical body but also your mind, your heart, and your soul.
Breathwork is a way to hack our nervous system (when it feels, literally, nervous) and get back to our grounded, strong, powerful selves.
Breathwork isn't new.
For about as long as humans have drawn breath, the conscious act of controlling and regulating breath has been a meditative practice.
Dozens of cultures practice some form of breathwork, and languages from around the world use the same words for "life" or "spirit" and for "breath." Here are just a few examples:
One form of breathwork that has been gaining steam recently is Holotropic Breathwork. This practice is becoming popular as both a spiritual practice and a practical one. But what is it? And does it work? Let's find out.
Not only can controlled breath improve mental and physical health, but it can also be used to enter an altered state of consciousness to help induce a feeling of deep relaxation and unlock energy.
Depending on age and size, the average human takes roughly 20 thousand breaths each day. But most of the time (if not always), that function is autonomous — we don't think about it.
How often do we stop to regard the breath, breathe with conscious purpose, or even take time to be grateful that we can? Often, we don't — and the result is that we ignore our singular keystone of vitality: the act of breathing itself.
Breathing is autonomous because of its essential vitality. It supplies us with the oxygen we need to live, and it filters toxins and waste out of the body. It single-handedly maintains every function requisite for life.
The unfortunate reality is that most of us aren't getting it right when it comes to proper breath control.
From the Greek holos (whole) and trepein (to turn or move), the name "Holotropic" means "moving toward wholeness."
First developed and pioneered by Dr. Stanislav Grof in the 1970s, Holotropic Breathwork was used as an alternative to LSD. The declaration of the War on Drugs meant that substances with little study behind them (like psilocybin and LSD) garnered criminal status and became federally regulated (psilocybin and LSD are still classified as Schedule I substances), putting a damper on the research that Dr. Grof had been working on.
With these substances banned, Grof and his wife, Christina, set out to find something that would deliver the same antidepressant and antianxiety effects of LSD without the need for a drug. Grof's research ultimately led him to discover this breathing technique.
Rooted in the millennia of societies that came before and documented in some form by nearly every society of the global majority, breathwork finally started to become mainstream through Grof's work and modern reporting.
A study from 2013 documents the results of 11,000 people who participated in holotropic breathwork sessions over a period of 12 years. The results suggest that it can be used to treat a wide range of psychological and existential life issues. Many participants reported significant benefits related to emotional catharsis and internal spiritual exploration. Throughout the entire study, no negative reactions were reported.
At its most basic roots, Holotropic Breathwork is everything that thousands of years worth of societies and peoples already understood breathwork to be.
The Holotropic Breathwork experience is not dissimilar to the ceremonies surrounding ayahuasca or peyote. The technique combines controlled, accelerated, breathing with certain types of music. Through Holotropic Breathwork, practitioners can achieve an altered state of consciousness and can even explore their minds from an alternate perspective.
Holotropic Breathwork usually occurs with the eyes closed and lying down. Most sessions are conducted in a group setting by trained facilitators. These facilitators guide people through the class, and they do it by controlling the pace of breathing as meditative music plays in the background.
Unique to Holotropic Breathwork is the partner-oriented practice. Participants are paired with one acting as the breather and the other as the sitter. The breather lies on a mat and begins the breathing exercises. The sitter's responsibility is to support the breather as he or she goes through the exercises and to ensure comfort without interference.
A typical Holotropic Breathwork practice is divided into two sessions where the breathers and sitters take turns supporting one another.
During the first part of practice, breathers work to transition the control of their breathing process from unconscious (autonomous) to conscious (behavioral). These rhythms, combined with the varied inhalations and exhalations, are meant to induce a deeper state of consciousness and relaxation. As the music and breathing become more intense, the breather may experience expanded consciousness. The session ends with meditative music, and then the practitioners switch roles.
Once the final session is concluded, participants are offered a few minutes of recovery and integration. They can share their feelings and use artwork to express their sensory experience during the session and are often asked to journal or prepare a way of reflection for when they return to everyday routines and society.
According to anecdotal evidence (including that from millennia of civilizations across the globe), the true breakthrough of breathwork is that hearts are opened and participants confront their feelings and achieve vivid, personal insights into their lives.
While the health benefits of Holotropic Breathwork can't be understated, it is, at its core, an emotional and spiritual practice.

In this piece, we explore some natural ways you can assist your body in the detoxification process.
Recent studies have uncovered the effectiveness of CBD in helping your body detox. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to regulate homeostasis. With more efficient homeostatic function, major body detox organs, such as the liver, are also able to function better.

There are several health benefits associated with exercise, and reducing inflammation is an essential element. Reduced inflammation facilitates the proper functioning of your detoxification system.
When anxiety, stress, and professional obligations hit all at once, you often have inadequate time for sleep — but this is exactly when you need adequate sleep the most.
Quality sleep is crucial for supporting your body's natural detoxification system. A good night's sleep allows your brain to recharge and reorganize itself. Additionally, your brain uses this time to flush out toxic waste.
Poor sleep means your body won't perform these functions and will leave toxins to build up, affecting your health. Also, sleep deprivation or sleep disruption leads to short- and long-term health consequences, including stress, anxiety, and obesity.
Some dietary components, like sugar, alcohol, and processed foods, increase your toxic load, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Research has linked the consumption of high amounts of processed foods and sugars with obesity and other diseases.
Some of these illnesses harm internal organs, such as the kidneys and liver, that are essential for detoxification. Limit the intake of junk food to maintain your detoxification system.
You should also limit the amount of alcohol in your diet. Although low to moderate alcohol consumption is sustainable, excessive drinking leads to health issues and liver damage. A damaged liver is characterized by inflammation, fat buildup, and reduced function and will not be efficient at filtering waste and toxins from your body. If you must drink, limit your alcohol consumption to one or two drinks a day.
Vegetables and fruits contain much-needed nutrients, such as antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins, that help your body's detox pathways.
Cruciferous vegetables, in particular, contain sulfur and phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory benefits and can help your body on its detox journey. Vegetables like these boost glutathione production, a vital antioxidant that minimizes oxidative stress:

Your intestinal cells have a natural excretion and detoxification system that safeguards your body and gut from harmful toxins. Therefore, you need to ensure that you keep your gut healthy for an efficient detoxification system.

]]>Ketamine is a general anesthetic that is now emerging as a potential treatment for depression, PTSD, and other mental disorders.
Ketamine was first developed in the 1960s as a replacement for PCP (phencyclidine). Previously, PCP had been used as a general anesthetic but was quickly falling out of favor with doctors and patients alike because of the extreme hallucinations it caused.
Ketamine’s use as a general anesthetic really took off during the Vietnam war because ketamine, unlike other general anesthetics, doesn’t slow breathing or heart rate. This meant that ketamine could be used on the battlefield and in other situations where another anesthetic wouldn’t have been feasible.
Since that time, ketamine has been one of the most common anesthetics in operating rooms around the world.
Although ketamine was originally developed as an alternative to the hallucinogenic PCP, ketamine does also cause hallucinations (although much more minor than those caused by PCP and other drugs). Because of its hallucinogenic effects, ketamine is most often used in veterinary medicine. However, it is still used as an anesthetic for minor procedures in human medicine, particularly in pediatric care.
According to WebMD, first responders have utilized ketamine to calm people who were trying to take their own lives. Some even found that these same patients reported a lack of suicidal thoughts even several months later.
As the anecdotal evidence mounted, doctors and researchers began to wonder if there was more to ketamine than just general anesthesia.
Today, ketamine may be an option for people with major depressive disorder that hasn’t responded to other medications.
In 2019, the first FDA-approved version of antidepressant ketamine became available. This particular version is a nasal spray called Spravato (esketamine), and it can be prescribed by a doctor for individual use.
Throughout the country, researchers and psychiatry clinics have also been investigating the benefits and uses of off-label intravenous ketamine as a potential treatment for major depression. And while off-label may sound shady, it simply refers to the legal use of a medication or drug in a way other than what the FDA had originally approved. Many medications got their start this way.
The fascinating thing about ketamine, however, is that the discovery of its usefulness for depression “came largely out of basic neuroscience research, instead of by chance,” like other off-label medications.

Ketamine, like any drug or medication, can be dangerous if used incorrectly or in the wrong doses. Also, ketamine does have a reputation as a party drug under a variety of nicknames — special K, vitamin K, and cat valium, to name a few — which may make people cautious to try it.
However, when administered by a medical professional in a clinical setting, and with the appropriate techniques for integrating the experience, the effects of ketamine are safe and can be life-changing.
Dr. Steven Levine, in an article for Psycom, also says, “Studies show that in the very low doses we use, in a medical setting, with lack of access at home and infrequent dosing, there is virtually no potential for addiction or abuse.”
Mental health clinics throughout the United States have begun to administer ketamine at a low, sub-anesthetic dose for the treatment of mental and physical disorders like anxiety, PTSD, depression, suicidality, and pain, and they are achieving amazing results.
If you’re interested in ketamine treatments, make sure that you prepare for the experience as well as you can.
Start by talking to your doctor, who can help you decide if ketamine is the right option for you. Not everybody with depression or PTSD is a good candidate for ketamine, and your doctor can provide valuable insight.
You should also do plenty of research and gather as much information as you can. This post and the articles linked here are a great place to start.
Because ketamine can cause nausea, you might want to go without food or drinks in the hours leading up to the procedure. A clinic will have more specific guidelines on this, but you might expect to abstain from food for eight hours and drinks for four hours.
Journaling can help you organize your thoughts. What do you want to get out of the experience? What are you worried about? What are your treatment goals? Be as simple or as elaborate as you want. You can also look back at this journal entry later to gauge how the treatment is going.
You should arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure and stay with you for at least several hours or the rest of the day. Ketamine can bring up intense emotions and you may not feel comfortable being home alone. You may also feel groggy or disoriented, so having a driver is the safest bet.
Talk with your spouse, family, or roommates about your plan so that they can support you at home after the experience.
The IV ketamine treatment generally lasts about two hours. Some clinical side effects include elevated blood pressure and heart rate.
Many people report a high or trippy experience while receiving ketamine, and some experience a little nausea. Others describe a state of dissociation or an out-of-body experience. Some people experience blurred vision and slurred speech. These effects wear off quickly after the injection is over.
During the injection, you will be able to see and hear what’s going on around you, but you may feel disconnected from your body, feel like you’re floating, or have minor hallucinations.
After the treatment, you might still feel disoriented. You shouldn’t drive, act as a caretaker, or sign any important paperwork until you feel back to normal, which may take a day or so.
Ketamine isn’t a magic cure-all. (Unfortunately, those don’t exist yet.) But it can give you a little room to breathe so that you can get your feet under you, as the saying goes.
